Michael, a maker of violins (and other stringed instruments) is a luthier. There is a particular jolly fellow down in Launceston who has a blog http://philipsmithluthier.blogspot.com/ and also a website http://www.philipsmithluthier.com/Welcome.html.
The luthier in your photograph reminds me of Tom Keneally, whom I don't think makes violins!
No disrespect to the above but I think "violin maker" suits the simplicity of the photo more, love the feeling of yesteryear this photo evokes, what a wonderful shot Michael, glad you're a photographer and not an english professor, because sometimes a violin maker is just a violin maker hehehe hahaha ;)

I didn't know that Santa Claus makes violins! I thought he only made toys? Boy, he sure is busy in his workshop!
